Description
‘I Am a Rock’
Oil on Board
15.5 x 15.5 cm
I Am a Rock continues the theme of David Bennison’s Labyrinth Series paintings, where lovable elephants, knights in shining armour, and manic chimpanzees frolic through castle ruins, lighthouses, and helter-skelters, among other things. Over time, these mischievous creatures have become recurring metaphors that symbolise the existential journey within David’s work.
I Am a Rock depicts a defiant, wise knight sitting high atop a mountain of books in the shape of an elephant. The overgrown elephant form represents time and wisdom, while the books symbolise knowledge. These key elements illustrate wisdom, knowledge, and a steadfast belief in the qualities obtained throughout a lifetime.
The Song, I Am a Rock inspired the creation of this image through its lyrics.
I’ve built walls
A fortress deep and mighty
That none may penetrate
I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain
It’s laughter and it’s loving I disdain
I am a rock
I am an island
Don’t talk of love
Well I’ve heard the word before
It’s sleeping in my memory
I won’t disturb the slumber of feelings that have died
If I never loved I never would have cried
I am a rock
I am an island
I have my books
And my poetry to protect me
I am shielded in my armour
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb
I touch no one and no one touches me
I am a rock
I am an island
And a rock feels no pain
And an island never cries
